China’s industrial sewing machine production and sales, imports and exports have declined in 2019
The demand for textile and clothing equipment (including textile machines and sewing machines) has continued to decline since 2018. The output of industrial sewing machines in 2019 has dropped to the level of 2017, about 6.97 million units; affected by the domestic economic downturn and the shrinking downstream demand for clothing, etc. In 2019, domestic sales of industrial sewing machines were approximately 3.08 million units, a year-on-year decrease of approximately 30%.
From the perspective of hundreds of companies, in 2019, 100 companies of industrial sewing machines produced 4,170,800 units and sold 4.23 million units, with a production-sales ratio of 101.3%. Affected by the Sino-US trade dispute and the slowdown in international and domestic demand, the import and export of industrial sewing machines all declined in 2019.
1. China’s industrial sewing machine output has declined, with 100 companies accounting for 60%
From the perspective of the output of industrial sewing machines in my country, from 2016 to 2018, under the two-wheel drive of the upgrading of industry products and the improvement of the prosperity of the downstream industry, the output of industrial sewing machines achieved rapid growth. The output in 2018 reached 8.4 million units, the highest in recent years. value. According to data from the China Sewing Machinery Association, the output of industrial sewing machines in my country in 2019 was about 6.97 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 17.02%, and the output dropped to the level of 2017.
In 2019, the 100 backbone complete machine companies tracked by the association produced a total of 4.170 million industrial sewing machines, a year-on-year decrease of 22.20%, accounting for about 60% of the total output of the industry.
2. China’s industrial sewing machine market is becoming saturated, and domestic sales continue to be sluggish
From 2015 to 2019, the internal sales of industrial sewing machines showed a fluctuating trend. In 2019, affected by the increasing downward pressure on the domestic economy, the escalation of Sino-US trade disputes, and the phased saturation of the market, downstream demand for clothing and other apparel has shrunk significantly, and domestic sales of sewing equipment have rapidly slowed to negative growth. In 2019, the domestic sales of industrial sewing machines was about 3.08 million, a year-on-year decrease of about 30%, and sales were slightly lower than 2017 levels.
3. The production of industrial sewing machines in China’s 100 enterprises has slowed down, and the production and sales rate is hovering at a low level.
According to the statistics of 100 complete machine companies tracked by the China Sewing Machinery Association, the sales of industrial sewing machines from 100 complete machine companies in 2016-2019 showed a fluctuating trend, and the sales volume in 2019 was 4.23 million units. From the perspective of the production and sales rate, the production and sales rate of industrial sewing machines of 100 complete machine companies in 2017-2018 was less than 1, and the industry experienced phased overcapacity.
In the first quarter of 2019, the supply of industrial sewing machines in the industry has generally tightened, with the production and sales rate exceeding 100%. Since the second quarter of 2019, due to the shrinking market demand, the production of enterprises has slowed down, and the situation that market supply exceeds demand has continued to appear. Due to the relative cautiousness of the industry situation in 2020, in the third and fourth quarters of 2019, companies took the initiative to reduce production and shrink inventory, and the pressure on product inventory was reduced.
4. International and domestic demand has slowed down, and imports and exports have both declined
The export of my country’s sewing machinery products is dominated by industrial sewing machines. In 2019, the export of industrial sewing machines accounted for nearly 50%. Affected by the Sino-US trade dispute and the slowdown in international demand, the total annual demand for industrial sewing equipment in the international market has declined in 2019. According to data from the General Administration of Customs, the industry exported a total of 3,893,800 industrial sewing machines in 2019, a decrease of 4.21% year-on-year, and the export value was US$1.227 billion, an increase of 0.80% year-on-year.
From the perspective of industrial sewing machine imports, from 2016 to 2018, the number of industrial sewing machine imports and the value of imports both increased year by year, reaching 50,900 units and US$147 million in 2018, the highest values in recent years. In 2019, the cumulative import volume of industrial sewing machines was 46,500 units, with an import value of 106 million U.S. dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 8.67% and 27.81% respectively.
